Wathiq Platform
Wathiq Platform is a free Jordanian initiative dedicated to collecting and preserving documents, photos, and audio, visual, and audiovisual recordings of national significance. Its mission is to safeguard this heritage for future generations and make it accessible to researchers, scholars, and the public. The platform aims to facilitate the process for citizens to upload and contribute documents of national importance in their possession.
In accordance with the National Documents Law No. 9 of 2017, a "Document" is defined as follows:
- Any material written by hand, printed, recorded in shorthand, stored electronically, or preserved in any other form. This includes documents printed on waxed paper, photocopies, audio tapes, photos, films, diagrams, drawings, and maps.
- Public National Documents are the property of the State, regardless of their origin or location. They may not be seized or disposed of. Any person in possession of such documents is obligated to submit them to the National Library if he is a public legal person, or to provide a copy if he is a private legal person.
- Private National Documents: Any document related to the national public interest due to its historical value and contribution to the national heritage, which is privately owned by individuals.
- The Law obligates any person who owns or possesses a national document to declare its possession, protect it, preserve its original form and content, and undertake any necessary restoration. Furthermore, they must notify the National Library in the event of the transfer of ownership or disposal of the document.
Submitted documents will be reviewed by specialists at the National Library to select those pertaining to Jordan and possessing historical, national, and heritage significance. Selected materials will be indexed, classified, and electronically preserved within the National Library's precious collections. They will then be made available to researchers, recognizing their critical importance in preserving our national identity and their vital role in academic studies.
The platform also features a dedicated gallery showcasing documents of national significance, which are categorized into the following formats:
- Paper Documents
- Photos
- Videos
- Audio Files
The objectives of the platform are summarized as follows:
- Encouraging citizens to preserve their documents of national significance to safeguard the national memory.
- Collecting and organizing documents of all types (handwritten, printed, audio, visual, audiovisual, and electronic).
- Making documents available to researchers, scholars, and enthusiasts after they have been processed by the National Library.
